What is the Business and Law exam?+–
It's required of every General Contractor applicant in Tennessee, regardless of classification. It covers TN contractor licensing law, business organization, project management, and finance — separate from your trade-specific exam.
Who administers the exam, and how do I schedule it?+–
Tennessee contractor licensing exams are administered by Prov (Prov took over from PSI in July 2026). You'll schedule your Business & Law and trade exams directly through Prov once your application is approved by the Board.
Are the exams open-book?+–
Yes. TN contractor exams are open-book, so the skill being tested is finding the right answer quickly in your approved reference materials — not memorization. Our practice exams simulate that same timed, open-book format.
What do BC-A, BC-B, and combined classifications mean?+–
BC-A covers residential building, BC-B covers commercial, BC-C covers industrial, and BC-A,b(sm) is the combined residential + small commercial classification. If your work spans categories, Prov also lets you test multiple classifications in one sitting (e.g. BC-A,B) — we let you pick a bundle rather than separate courses.
